Construction of the Riviera Nayarit Project Begins

March 24th, construction of the tourist complex "Riviera Nayarit" will begin. "Riviera Nayarit" extends along 180 kms of beachfront property from Nuevo Vallarta to San Blas, all in the neighboring state of Nayarit just north of Puerto Vallarta. This FONATUR project will eventually include 44 individual tourist developments, an international airport, 6 golf courses and 4 marinas.

The first phase of development will take 2 ½ years, March 2008 - September 2010. It will include a 4-lane highway Bucerìas-Compostela, a distance of about 100 kms. which will reduce driving time on this stretch by 1 hour, and a 2-lane highway Tepic-San Blas, which will reduce the driving time between these two cities to 20 minutes.

The Bucerìas-Compostela highway will have 40 bridges. Mescales, Nuevo Vallarta and Bucerìas will all have overpasses. The speed limit on entire highway will be 110 kms./hr. Since driving time will be reduced, tourists arriving from Guadalajara, "El Bajìo" and even Mexico City will begin arriving in larger numbers to this area of the Pacific coast in the coming years.

A new international airport at "Boca de Chila", the area known as "El Capomo", will also be built during this first phase. Close to Rincòn de Guayabitos, about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta. Once completed, many of the flights to the Pacific coast of Nayarit will no longer arrive at the Puerto Vallarta airport.

Total investment in the next 30 months is estimated at $750 million U.S. Promotion of this developing tourist resort area will be guaranteed by FONATUR (Mexican Federal Government Tourist Development Agency) which has previously developed projects like Cancùn, Los Cabos, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Huatulco.

The governor of Nayarit, Ney Gonzàlez, has stated that condominium construction will not receive support from his government in the Bucerìas area so as to provide low-density constructions of high-quality to attract high quality tourism.
